My journey to opening this private practice is a bit of a long story but it does let you know my background and the amount of experience I bring to caring for your child.

The only medical school in Oregon, OHSU, graduates a small number of Pediatricians each year, most of whom go on to specialty practices, NOT primary healthcare. Nurse practitioners are filling that gap. As a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP), the volume of my educational hours differs from physicians only in internship and residency. My 33 years of nursing experience have given me clinical expertise and diagnostic abilities, which are fine-tuned and accurate. I am proud to say I graduated in the first class to receive the clinical doctorate degree, the Doctor of Nursing Practice, DNP, in June 2009.

The nursing profession models itself on a “caring” model. In no way is this to mean that medical doctors do not care for children, they do. But the DNP/CPNP is taught to see the child with a fever and pulling on their ears, diagnose the ear infection, and prescribe a medication or treatment and talk with the family about why this is the 4th ear infection in the last 6 months. Are there pets at home? Is there a family history of allergies? Is there an environmental issue in the neighborhood? Does the caregiver “prop” the bottle to feed the babe?

Rose City Pediatrics is the type of clinic that provides parent education, classes for new parents and for parents of adolescents who need direction in communication with teenagers. The definition of healthcare here is not only treating the illness but keeping families with children healthy, emotionally and physically.
